Why Antibacterial Soaps are banned and Natural Alternative Remedies

If you read the news recently, you would know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned the sales of antibacterial soaps. The reason, they say, is because it is not better and cleaner than the regular soap. And it can even be more dangerous to our health in a long term.

The first thing I want to say about the news is “About time!”  I have always doubted about the actual benefits of these products as well as concerning about their long-term impact on our health.

The marketing of antibacterial soaps reminds me of the marketing of smoking and cigarettes in the 80s. During that time, they were favorably advertised on the market and television even without warning anyone about the severe impacts of smoking on our health. Now everyone knows how terrible smoking is. I am so thrilled to know that the time of false advertising of antibacterial soap is now coming to an end.

Why antibacterial soaps deserve to be banned

  1. What exactly are antibacterial soaps?

Antibacterial soaps, or antimicrobial and antiseptic soaps, are over-the-counter antiseptic wash products which contain 1 or more specific active ingredients which cannot be found in regular soap.

There are 19 ingredients which are on the list to be banned.

The most common active ingredients used in various brands of soaps are triclosan (liquid soaps) and triclocarban (bar soaps).

  1. Why are they banned?

The first reason that antibacterial soaps are banned from marketing on the market is that they are not as effective as they are advertised. In fact, there is no scientific evidence to support their effectiveness against germs and bacteria.

The second reason is scarier. Not only that antibacterial soaps are worthless, they are even harmful. Scientists have proved that 19 active ingredients found in common antibacterial soaps can cause bacterial resistance and affect the normal balance of the hormone level in our body.

The most common ingredient, triclosan, also creates resistance against various medical treatments such as antibiotics.

Furthermore, using antibacterial soaps may give you a sense of security. You might think that if you use these products, you are protected from germs and bacteria, which is not true.

Lastly, with all the toxins and chemical involved in the production of antibacterial soaps, they cause significant damage to the environment,

Notes: Besides banning antibacterial soaps which have at least 1 ingredient on the list, any wash product which contains benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride and chloroxylenol (PCMX) is still under the test of the FDA for further data to be collected before they come to the final decision.

Only antibacterial soaps and hand washes are banned. Other products that contain triclosan such as toothpaste, hand wipes, and sanitizers are currently under reviewing.

If you are using antibacterial soaps for a long time, it is now the right moment to change to alternative methods, which are proven to be safer and much more effective.

Normally, washing your hands regularly with warm water is enough to kill off most of the germs. You just need to make sure you know how to wash your hand properly. You need to rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds under running water and rinse thoroughly.
