We offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction by Distance education - live online -  and we think you will find it quite different to other online options - in terms of dedicated attention from a teacher, time spent in actual practice and experience in the group.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an evidence-based, user-friendly program that brings the principles of mindfulness meditation into everyday life by teaching specific skills and practices to help break cycles of anxiety, stress, unhappiness and exhaustion.

Openground is proud to be endorsed by Emeritus Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn – who developed MBSR at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1979 for people suffering chronic and acute stress, chronic pain and illness, and associated anxiety and depression.  As seen on ABC Catalyst TV.

What does it involve?

  • an individual phone interview, and ongoing support from your teacher
  • a 2.5 hour class, over eight weeks, plus one full retreat day(you can attend this live at an Openground course sometime, or do it at home via audio we will provide)
  • mindfulness meditation and body awareness training 
  • an exploration of your own patterns and how to transform them 
  • scientific rationale for the practice 
  • access to Openground audio app for practice and a 100 page coursebook

B.A .(Bus), Dip. Counselling, MACA II, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner
Mary has practised meditation since 1988, primarily in the Insight tradition and later in other lineages. She came to appreciate firsthand the clinical application of mindfulness meditation for anxiety, pain and stress and has facilitated Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction groups since 2011. She is a certified teacher with MTI, Mindfulness Training Institute - Australia New Zealand. Mary is passionate about how we can achieve optimal inner and outer health through body-mind practices. She works as a counsellor / somatic psychotherapist in Brisbane and supports trainee mindfulness teachers in honing their craft.

Governance 

Openground Pty Ltd is directly responsible for the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses offered in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane, in addition to our professional training programs, retreats and most workshops. The courses offered in all other locations are operated by associates of Openground, and the respective teachers of those courses are responsible for all aspects of course delivery, advertising, fee structure and professional and clinical decision-making. The Openground teachers’ group provides ongoing peer supervision, consultation and support, to ensure our MBSR courses are high quality, accessible, and sustainable.

Openground for Organisations Pty Ltd is responsible for all organisational work.

 

Fee structure

Traditionally, mindfulness meditation was taught in a spiritual context on a donation basis. The Openground MBSR program has sprung from this tradition, but is offered by qualified professional teachers as part of their work. For this reason, we charge course fees for our classes.

We’re committed to making the MBSR program accessible to as many people as possible, including those who genuinely can’t afford the full fee. To this end, we offer strongly discounted places and payment plans. Since its inception, the Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane arm of Openground has given away 35% of potential income as discounted places.

While Please contact us to enquire about discounted places. And keep in mind, that in order to continue offering such strong discounts, we also need to have places filled by people who are able to pay the full fee.

Return Policies

Refunds for 8 week courses

We are confident you will find the course engaging and that you have enrolled knowing that the course invites your own self-exploration.   

Fees will be refunded (less $50) if you withdraw two days before the first class. Fees will be refunded (less $100) if you withdraw the day before the first class or after session 1 (if you decide the course is not for you). After this class, fees are not refundable.

Transfers

We do not offer transfers to a subsequent course. If you wish to withdraw from your current course partway through, you will be offered a 50% discount off the course fee for the following term.

Special Circumstances

If you are unable to complete the course because of serious life disruption (e.g. due to serious illness or family crisis) we are happy to review these circumstances and at our discretion may provide a credit note so that you can enrol in a future course. To request this please email Caroline Friend or contact the teacher of your course. 

Refunds for Retreats and Workshops

Cancellations received up to or before 1 month before the event – the fee will be refunded less $110.
Cancellations received up to 10 working days before the event – 50% of the fee will be refunded.
Cancellations received 10 working days or less before the event – no refund will be made. 

Refunds for the day of mindfulness

The day of mindfulness is non-refundable and non-transferable

The use of data collection technology at Openground is being handled with full and proper respect for the privacy of our participants. The data we collect is handled sensitively, securely and with proper regard to personal privacy. We will not release your details, including your email address, to any other party. Openground fully supports the ‘National Privacy Principles for the Fair Handling of Personal Information’ launched in February 1998.
